This is the largest municipality in the area known as Campo Charro in the province of Salamanca. It is a land of holm oak woods and grassland, making it ideal for raising cattle, and in particular the autochthonous Morucha breed, as well as herds of fighting bulls. The town is perched on a hilltop and is characterised by its quaint terraced houses.
According to the locals, the unusual name of this place is related to the nearby meadow where people with wounds or grazes would be healed. Indeed, the first idea that springs to mind is the presence of pilgrims on the road to Santiago, as the route passed close to the town’s houses. Today the pilgrims’ route is well off the main roads and newly-built motorways that crisscross this area.
