The number of inhabitants of this peaceful country town has dropped considerably due to its remote location. The surname Castroponce is a reminder of the noble family that once ruled over these lands. The region known as ‘Polvorosa’ has witnessed many historic events such as the battle in which Ramiro, King of León, defeated the Arabs laying siege to Benavente.
An interesting fact is that Benavente’s coat-of-arms, which depicts the Virgin Mary and a bridge, reminds us of this victory which would encourage the Christians to advance towards the River Duero.
This town is also the site of the Church of Santa María and Vizana Bridge.
