Nestling between two hills known as La Mambla and Santa María, on the banks of the River Duero. Dating back to medieval times, as the name of both the town and the ancient parish church indicate, it was the site of one of the fortresses that guarded the Duero defence line. The earliest documentary evidence dates back to the year 912. Highlights of the built heritage include the parish church dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption and there is also a chapel dedicated to the Virgin of Castrejón.
