The "Puebla-Lago de Sanabria" route takes its name from the glacial lake that, with its 318 hectares of surface and a depth that reaches up to 51 meters, makes it the largest on the Iberian Peninsula.

The route runs through the towns of Puebla de Sanabria, El Puente, Galende, Pedrazales, Quintana de Sanabria, Ilanes, and Castro de Sanabria , entering part of the Lago de Sanabria Natural Park, and more specifically in the municipality of Galende.

The route takes advantage of the old traditional paths in the area, crossing the most abundant forests in the area, which are those formed by the melojo or rebollo oak . There are also some interesting patches of holly and yew , while birch and alder trees are abundant on the banks of the mighty rivers that descend from the peaks.

The direction of travel, being signposted in both directions, is less demanding to start leaving Puebla de Sanabria in the direction of the Lake, taking the direction of El Puente, since in the opposite direction from Puebla towards the heights of Quintana de Sanabria, the difference in level to be overcome is quite hard climbs.

In addition to its high environmental value, the Sanabria Natural Park and its surroundings offer valuable historical, artistic and cultural resources. Along with the interesting Romanesque monastery of Santa María , which houses the interpretive headquarters of Lake Sanabria in the Casa del Parque de San Martín de Castañeda , the urban and monumental complex of Puebla de Sanabria and the numerous examples of popular architecture distributed in the towns stand out. of the area.

In the surroundings, the emblematic Iberian wolf , once the protagonist of stories and legends, although present, is today increasingly difficult to see.
