In Paredes de Nava, the Canal by-passes the river Retortillo by taking the 3-arched aqueduct. This is where the level of the river rises and flows into the Laguna de la Nava, a little further on up the river. This lagoon is one of Castilla y León's most important wetlands, known as the Mar de Campos. Here, tourists can find 6 aqueducts and the Sahagún water tower situated at kilometre number 102.4.

At one time, Paredes de Nava was made up of 21 little villages. Now only 3 of the original villages have survived, Sahagún el Viejo, Santa Coloma and Carejas. Later it was split up into 8 districts, now reduced to 4, each of which has its own church, which are the Iglesia de Santa María, the Iglesia de San Juan, the Iglesia de Santa Eulalia and the Iglesia de San Martín. However, the list of religious buildings housed inside the 12th century walls of this village, is long. Many other hermitages, the Convento de Santa Brígida and the old Convento de San Francisco complete the list.
