The name of this site comes from the villa situated nearby that belonged to Emperor Marcus Aurelius, a bust of whom can still be seen in the parish church. In 1899 a Roman villa was discovered in the area known as Las Villas, containing mosaics, marble busts and other materials that today form part of the collection housed in Spain’s National Archaeology Museum and León Museum.

This town is also the site of the Church of San Lorenzo and Torreón Castle.
