The pilgrims’ route runs through the municipality of Navianos, bypassing the town. It is believed that the name Navianos de la Vega refers to the men and women from Navia (Asturias), who repopulated and settled in these lands won back from the Moors between the years 890 and 910.
In 1313 it was granted a series of privileges that gave it a degree of importance when traffic along the Silver Route and the Cañada Real transhumance route was at its height. It was also a major stopping place in the days of the Romans, as revealed by the large number of Roman mosaics tiles and other objects that can be seen here.
This town is also the site of the Parish Church of Santa María de la Vega.
