Originally it was known as Villa Citti, although the name was later changed to Santervás, which in turn comes from San Herbás (Gervais), in reference to first abbot of the Monastery of Sahagún, situated just a short distance from this municipality. Santervás de Campos was the birthplace of Juan Ponce de León, who discovered Florida and founded San Juan de Puerto Rico.
Also situated in this town is the church dedicated to the martyrs Saint Gervais and Saint Protase.
