The Santa Espina district, which belongs to the municipality of Castromonte, is one of the 800 towns that appeared during the 1950s on the initiative of the National Colonisation Institute for the Agrarian Development of Spain. Nevertheless, the earliest settlement first sprang up around the monastery that once stood here.
The religious community would suffer the effects of the confiscation of church property and most of its works of art would be lost. However, it regained some of its former vitality following the creation of a farm run by La Sallian Brothers who, in the mid 20th century, would turn it into a School of Farming Studies.
