The earliest documentation of this enclave, which is situated at southwest on five kms from Mansilla, on the right bank of the river Esla, and that is referenced as Novali Saltu site, dates back to 1142 when Alfonso VII gave the place to the Count Ponce de Minerva and his wife, Stephanie. This, in turn, handed it to the Cistercians of La Santa Espina who started the foundation in 1171 from a monastery under the patronage of Santa Maria.
