In a provincial town, Mario, a mediocre office worker living in a modest boarding house, meets young Natalia one night, whose face reflects a profound sadness. He engages her in conversation to cheer her up, and she explains how her dull life changed when she met a handsome stranger with whom she fell in love, and how every night she awaits his return. For four magical nights, Mario, in love with Natalia, harbors the hope of replacing the mysterious stranger in her heart.

Directed by Luchino Visconti, adapting the novel of the same name by Fyodor Dostoevsky.
