The Antruejo of Villanueva de Valrojo, stands out for its traditional character and the uniqueness of its pagan symbolic motifs. It is celebrated in the days before Lent, especially on Fat Sunday and Shrove Tuesday, although it extends from January 17, as reflected in the popular saying: "Los mozos sinso, por San Antón, corren el antruejo" (Senseless young men, on Saint Anthony, run the Antruejo).

The traditional clothing consists of brightly coloured suits with floral or harlequin prints, with blouses and loose trousers. The masks, hand-made by the locals, are usually made of pressed paper, wax or leather. To conceal their identity, they cover the back of their heads with scarves or rags. The most characteristic feature is the cowbells they wear tied to their waists, the number of which varies, and which resonate throughout the village during the celebrations.
