Barrosa Festival
The Fiesta de la Barrosa de Abejar has been declared a Festival of Tourist Interest in Castilla y León on 12/02/2025. This festival, somewhere between mythological and carnivalesque, is celebrated on the first Saturday after Shrove Tuesday. Of ancient and uncertain origin, the whole town takes part in the festival, although the protagonists are the young men, and among them, two are the main actors and will play the role of Barroseros. One Barrosero carries a wooden frame covered with a white sheet decorated with coloured ribbons, simulating the figure of a cow, which is La Barrosa, and the other Barrosero, carries a basket and a whip, also decorated, and visits the houses of the town receiving donations and food. The characteristic sound of the cowbells of La Barrosa accompanies the Barroseros during the tour of the streets of Abejar announcing their presence to the neighbours.
