The Movida madrileña was a countercultural movement that emerged during the first years of the Transition of post-Franco Spain, which later spread to other provinces and lasted until the mid-eighties.

Traditionally, the movement is considered to have materialized with the renowned Concert in tribute to Canito in 1980, in memory of Canito and promoted at the School of Roads in Madrid by those who later became "Los Secretos".

Although it is true that its first mass endorsement took place in 1981 with the "Spring Concert" of the School of Architecture.

Born in Madrid, the movement soon took on a much larger scale at a sociological and national level, spreading mimetically to other Spanish capitals, with the connivance and encouragement of some politicians, mainly socialists, among whom the then mayor of Madrid, Enrique Tierno Galván , stands out, who had studied marginal youth culture in depth from a sociological point of view. Political support for this alternative culture was intended to show a turning point between Franco's society and the new society of democracy.

This image of a "modern" Spain, or at least one open to modernity, would be used internationally to combat the negative image that the country had acquired over four decades of dictatorship. However, despite this countercultural movement, a large part of the country’s social and economic structures were inherited from the previous regime.
