My father is Lear, but he has never set foot in a theatre. I am Cordelia. And I am a theatre director. Like her, I am going to look for Lear, I am going to dare to look at him and I am going to try to forgive. And I am going to do it from a stage. Every night, a different actor will be Lear, he will be my father, he will be a possible father, one who wants to sit in a theatre and talk. I am going to be Lear too, and like him with his daughters, I am going to do a casting, a casting of fathers. This mock-version of King Lear aims to be an open door to think about how we relate to our parents, the biological ones, but also the metaphorical ones, including William Shakespeare himself. It is an autofiction based on a classic or an autofictional classic, and hopefully neither of the two things. It is a piece about origins, about how what came before haunts us even if we want to ignore it. About how those who precede us construct us. About how to invent a life that belongs to you without forgetting the past. About imagining other possible endings. It is also an audition, or a rehearsal, that which happens before everything happens, the place just before something takes its exact form. The exact moment when everything is still possible.
