The SeGospel choir takes its name, obviously, from the words Segovia and gospel. Gospel is a religious musical genre, choral in nature, that emerged from African-American churches in the 18th century. It is born from the tradition of "black spirituals", a music rooted in the suffering of generations of African slaves who were torn from their land and deported to the countries of America. Claiming this musical tradition, SeGospel was born in August 2011, founded by the musician Parfait Ekani Tsimi, a Cameroonian countertenor who came to Segovia through a scholarship for the promotion of young artists from disadvantaged countries granted by the Spanish-African foundation for artistic and cultural exchange HAIAC.

Parfait Ekani later had to leave and the director of SeGospel was taken over by a well-known pianist: Maestro Moriles.

Many people have been involved in the formation of SeGospel since its inception; it currently has about 30 members. SeGospel frequently appears in local press, radio and television.
