The Castilian and Leonese Institute of Language and the Provincial Council of Segovia are organizing on Sunday, December 29 (7:30 p.m.), at the Nuestra Señora del Manto Cultural Center in Riaza, the staging of the puppet theater Manual de Cervantes for failures from 6 to 106 years old, by the company Pie Izquierdo, written and directed by Esther Pérez Arribas and programmed with the collaboration of the Riaza City Council.
The play is a fun approach to the life of Miguel de Cervantes based on the motives and concerns that made his work a social chronicle of the time and which are reproduced with the intention of investigating current realities. Madness as a position outside of conventions but also as a mental illness and paradigm of the incomprehension and marginalization to which society subjects different people is the reason for this comedy, based on the premise that humor is an effective tool to deal with the most serious issues.
Aimed at people aged six and over, the scene is made up of a large pop-up book that creates scenes with each turn of the page in which to play with puppets and project shadows. The lighting is abundant in the manual nature of the set-up and forms part of the scene as an ancient and artisanal system that refers to the beginnings of theatre, before electricity existed. Its pages create different scenes as the pages are turned, on which Esther Pérez Arribas manipulates the puppets, which, in the form of fruits and vegetables, embody Miguel de Cervantes himself, as well as many other characters.
Sofío, the crazy, funny and ingenious illuminator, falls in love with Aldonza, the cook at the psychiatric hospital where they meet, and gives her a manual for understanding people (Cervantes' Manual) in exchange for her writing a recipe book for him. Through the relationship between Sofío and Aldonza, a path of understanding towards the most vulnerable people opens up for the public.
