The Castilian and Leonese Institute of Language and the City Council of Segovia are organizing on Thursday, November 28 (6:30 p.m.) at the Casa de la Lectura- Municipal Library of Segovia, the presentation of the essay De cantos y animales (Ediciones Menguantes), the first title by the Argentine writer Carolina Arabia. In this work, the author offers a journey through herself over eight years, which has led her to move between the voices of humans and animals, collecting cultural manifestations that sometimes seem destined to be forgotten.
Winner of the Finestres Essay Scholarship, which is being held by the Barcelona bookstore Finestres in 2022, the author highlights in this essay how song is found between human language and that of animals. Thus, she highlights how people sing to cows in the plains of Colombia and Venezuela, to oxen in the crop fields of Bhutan; how in the mountains of Morocco, shepherds and snake hunters tame animals with melodies from their flutes. She recognizes that people sing out loud or with instruments whose very anatomy appears intertwined with that of the animal and the vegetation that surrounds it, and she questions the meaning of the songs and the fact that at some point humans have been able to communicate through music with other species and shared the same language.
The book also includes a QR code that allows the reader to access the field recordings of the different songs, recorded in different natural environments that contributed, in many cases, with their own sounds; there is the agitation of the chickens, the sounds of the road traveling from one town to another in the Colombian Orinoquía or the presence of the wind in the Atlas Mountains. In some cases they incorporate elements that surrounded the performance, such as conversations, rehearsals, stories: the delicate search for the desired sound.
Carolina Arabia is working on the Lenguario Universa l project, an archive of rescued voices that expresses knowledge, experiences, stories and intangible cultural expressions. For years she taught at a literary workshop for children, called Taller del Zorro, in the center of Buenos Aires. She also previously lived in Colombia and currently resides in Spain, where she also teaches. The author will be accompanied during the presentation by the editor Lía Peinador.
