Love under the hawthorn , by Zhang Yimou. 2010. 121'. Drama, romance
Jing is a naive schoolgirl from the city who is forced to move to a remote mountain village for "re-education" during the Cultural Revolution. Her father has been imprisoned as a "rightist" and her mother struggles to feed her three children. Jing knows that both her future and the well-being of her family depend on her good behavior in the eyes of the authorities. But her cautious and quiet existence is turned upside down when she falls in love with Sun, the charming son of an elite military officer. Because of the social differences between them, a romance between them is not only unthinkable, but even dangerous.
Directed by Zhang Yimou, a clear representative of the renowned "Fifth Generation" of Chinese filmmakers, the film takes place in the 1970s during China's Cultural Revolution.
Ai Mi's novel of the same name on which the film is based has sold more than three million copies since its publication in 2007 and was selected by Asia Weekly magazine as the Best Chinese-language Novel of the Year.
