In the Key of a Woman: Teresa of Jesus
With a background of converted Jews who had fallen on hard times, Teresa of Avila was born into a Christian family that had many books at home, including books on chivalry, but not the Bible, which was always suspect to inquisitors of all times. She was a mystic, but also a cold businesswoman. For her, each foundation of a convent was not only a religious feat, but also a real estate transaction that was not always peaceful.
How could a woman prevail in a masculine world that was so suspicious of religious ideas and practices that deviated from the common norm? What was that world like, that 16th century that excluded women from everything that had to do with spiritual matters? What options were there for a woman? And for a nun? How did she manage to emerge unscathed from the accusations and scrutiny to which she was subjected by the Inquisition and part of the society of the time?
Teresa of Avila had a high opinion of herself and believed she was called to great undertakings; she rejected mediocrity. But this ambition is not incompatible, according to her, with the virtue of equality.
