On Wednesday, December 18, at 7:00 p.m., Alejandro Álvarez López will present his book.

Former union leader Alejandro Álvarez analyses the labour conflict in Duro Felguera between 1989 and 1999 with the mobilisations carried out to ensure that 232 dismissed workers were re-employed

At the end of the 1980s, Duro Felguera was a century-old industrial giant that provided thousands of jobs in the Nalón basin and maintained close ties to the political power. For their part, its employees had forged a solid assembly culture and maintained frequent demands. Rarely does a month go by without a strike at La Duro.
For this reason, Duro Felguera's intention to go from being a "blue-collar" company to a "white-collar" one, by laying off hundreds of workers, clashes head-on with the workforce, which is demanding good management, the maintenance of employment and a future plan for the basins.
Between 1989 and 1999, the workers responded to successive dismissals with strikes, marches, concerts, a 52-day hunger strike, numerous acts of sabotage and a 318-day sit-in in the tower of Oviedo Cathedral, making it one of the most radical and successful labour conflicts of recent decades, in which "La Duro" fought against the logic of the market until they achieved the reinstatement of each of those dismissed.
