Originally titled Sciuscià, it is, along with Bicycle Thieves, Umberto D. and Miracle in Milan, part of De Sica's most neorealist tetralogy.

Two young shoe-shiners, almost children, want to buy a horse and do everything they can to get it, but... without getting caught by the police who have their eye on them. Don Vittorio's humour comes into play and so does his easy way of rolling.
