"Embers of La Culebra: fire and death in the Zamora fires" by Juan Navarro García

In the summer of 2022, two fires devastated 6% of the province of Zamora. In the second of them, with its epicentre in Losacio, the flames and smoke killed four people and burned the Culebra mountain range, a biosphere reserve and source of life for the inhabitants of a rural region threatened by depopulation.

Juan Navarro García, who covered that tragedy on the ground, returns to the villages of Culebra to reconstruct, with precision and perspective, what happened in those dizzying hours. He fraternizes with the precarious firefighting teams that fought the fire, speaks with the volunteer psychologists who helped these men overcome the trauma, walks with relatives of the deceased, listens to the villagers, farmers and ranchers, and enters the offices of the Junta de Castilla y León where alternative stories are constructed to those collected in the villages.

Los rescoldos de la Culebra is a book about fires, depopulation and climate change, but also a treatise on popular resignation, a tribute to rural inhabitants and a moving story about heroism and survival.
