A house perched on a hill on the outskirts of Leenane, in the Connemara region, in the North West of Ireland. In the mid-1990s, Mag Folan and his daughter Maureen have lived alone for twenty years. Their other two married daughters live far away from Leenane and Maureen, who remains single at over forty, has to take care of her mother's food and other needs, who is very limited in her movements and even badly injured in one hand. Their respective characters, marred by silences and lies, and marked by domestic routines, by a tense and repressive mother-child relationship, by traumatic events from the recent past and by a history of mutual harm that will be revealed throughout the action, will be altered by a local episode: the eventual return to Leenane of Duck Dooley, who works as a labourer in London, on the occasion of a family farewell party for an uncle who is returning to America after the holidays. The circumstances will lead to the reunion of Pato and Maureen, which will provoke an obvious displeasure in the old woman, as well as a chain of situations between mother and daughter with dramatic consequences, and the visits to Mag and Maureen's house of Ray Dooley, Pato's younger brother, a boy with few social and work expectations. On the one hand, the sentimental relationship generated between Pato and Maureen, after the party, in addition to making Mag jealous, will create a state of self-deception in Maureen and a sharp confrontation with her mother.
