The church of San Polo, located next to the old San Pablo Gate, between San Pablo and Rector Esperabé streets, is one of the oldest temples in Salamanca, whose origin dates back to the 12th century, although the exact date of foundation is still a subject of debate among historians.

It began in the Mudéjar Romanesque style, with a three-aisled nave and a triple-apsed chancel, using brick as the building material. It underwent various transformations over the centuries, most notably the 1529 renovation, which added a tower and the western façade in the late Gothic style, using stone instead of brick.

Currently, only some remains of the original building are preserved: the walls of the nave up to the crossing area, the Gothic facade at the foot, the southern wall decorated with blind arches and a reconstructed portal with a pointed arch, as well as the beginnings of the Romanesque apses, the central one being larger.
