Porta Coeli Convent
Run by the cloistered Franciscan mothers, it was founded in 1445, with the property surrounding it being donated by D. Gómez de Benavides. Located in the Sierra de Francia area, its Gothic style church stands out, dating back to the 16th century. With a single nave, covered by star-crossed vaults, its main altar is presided over by a magnificent polychrome stone altarpiece whose center is the image of the Virgin of Porta Coeli, owner of the monastery. Also worth mentioning are the lateral arcosolia, with delicate Gothic ornamentation and carved shields, which house the tombs of the founders, Gómez de Benavides and his wife María Manrique.
The structure of the monastery forms an irregular rectangle, with the rooms surrounding a central cloister. The so-called Casa del Capellan is located in an independent building on the same property. After a terrible fire that occurred at the beginning of the 17th century, it underwent extensive renovations, although the church has preserved its original image.
