As a dependent organism of the Leonés Institute of Culture, it guards the ethnographic collection of the Provincial Council of León, developing the tasks of conservation, research and dissemination of the traditional culture and identity of the Leon Ethnographic Heritage, through its material culture, customs and traditions. in relation to the territory, landscape and diversity of its people, as well as showing the richness of the Camino de Santiago.

The Museum of the Leonese Peoples is based in Mansilla de las Mulas, 18 km from the city of León, it is located in what was the old Convent of San Agustín dating from around 1,500, founded by Fadrique Enríquez, admiral of Castilla . From this period the façade with a Renaissance façade, an ogee arch door, remains of the interior walls, flooring and the Renaissance funerary chapel of the lords of Villafañe are preserved. The new building adapts to these archaeological remains, articulating a modern and innovative museum space.
