Las Medulas
The best kept secret of the Roman Empire, the gold mines on which its power rested, has been shaped by time to become one of the most extraordinary landscapes of the Iberian Peninsula. Discover the beauty of Las Medulas, a UNESCO World Heritage Site nestled in the luxuriance of the Aquilanos Mountains, in the Leonese region of El Bierzo, and walk the magical paths of this unusual place, the result of the complex hydraulic engineering works used by the Romans to extract the precious golden mineral from the bowels of the mountain.
Let yourself be seduced by the dreamlike shapes of its peaks and walls of reddish sand, dotted with beautiful oak and chestnut forests. Stroll through the most emblematic corners of its more than 400 kilometers of channels excavated to convey water from the mountains, break the rock and reveal the coveted gold particles. Look out at its incredible viewpoints, enter its giant grottoes and caves or seek tranquility on the shores of its lakes and lagoons.
