For more than a century, coal mining was the engine of the Laciana Valley's economy. Together with the mineral extraction activity, a page in the energy history of our country was written, and the municipality of Villablino experienced rapid economic and industrial development, with the Laciana Valley being one of the main coal extraction points on the peninsula. .

Today, with the mining activity extinct, Laciana proudly preserves the legacy of that economic engine: a valuable industrial archeology worthy of being preserved and used as a tourist resource. An industrial heritage that blends in with the extraordinary natural environment that surrounds it and that appears as if it were something inherent to it.

Along the way on this long-distance cycle route we visit the main infrastructures that played an important role in coal extraction. To cite an example, the route takes us to the emblematic Pozo María, which will soon become a cultural and educational center of reference, and will house the Historical Archive of the Mining Families, or the old Villablino railway station, a representative location of our mining past and is part of the Ponfeblino tourist train project.

But the industrial heritage is not the only attraction of this route. In an area distinguished as a biosphere reserve, each pedal stroke takes us to places of incredible natural beauty, such as the Castro glacial lagoon or the lush mixed forests. And no less important are the outstanding elements that are part of our cultural heritage, such as the pre-Roman fort of Zamora.

The itinerary is quite a challenge for mountain bike lovers, with a route that is made up of two loops and offers three possibilities of different difficulty, adding the complete route to 40 kilometers of enjoyment for cyclists.

The Bike Minera Laciana is an approved route that has IMBA Spain certification, which accredits its suitability for tourism and sports recreation. Its route is perfectly signposted and the mining infrastructure as well as some natural and cultural resources have interpretive panels, turning the route not only into a mountain bike challenge, but into an interesting and illustrative itinerary that gives us a global vision of the role that coal mining had in the Laciana Valley.
