Surrounded by imposing peaks, Pedraza boasts breathtaking panoramic views from the hilltop, set amongst a landscape of rocks, shaped by erosion and dotted with magnificent woods of junipers, holm oaks and Pyrenean oaks.
The medieval town of Pedraza is surrounded by a wall, and in 1951 it was declared a Historic Site thanks to the excellent state of conservation of its heritage. Its origins date back to the days of Fernando Gómez de Albornoz, who was named Lord of Pedraza by King Henry II of Castile. At the end of the 15th century it became part of the dominions of Blanca Herrera and her husband, Bernardino Fernández de Velasco.
Its period of greatest splendour came during the 16th and 17th centuries, when most of the noble houses were built. Visitors will admire their beauty as they stroll around the streets, paved with the original medieval stones. Its prosperity was due to trade in merino wool and fabrics of outstanding quality, on a par with those of Flanders.
