Located in the northeast corner of Portugal, the "Trás-os-Montes Wine Region" is revealed between mountains and pronounced valleys in a large area, from Chaves to the Mirandesa Plateau, passing through the heart of the Terra Quente Transmontana, the Differences are repeated one after another, in a ritual that marks the enormous diversity that exists in the region. This is a unique region with special characteristics, in which the scenery changes rapidly, between lush green valleys, ancient hills covered by a blanket of forest mosaics, green olive trees or extensive bright green vineyards, flowering almond trees and other fruit trees.
The richness of the products reflects this diversity, with wine production being intrinsically implemented, with the Trás-os-Montes region widely recognized for the production of wines that date back to Roman times, such a presence is marked on the rocks of some of their places, and until today, 75 winepresses dug in rocks of Romanesque and pre-Romanesque origin have been perfectly identified.
With a distinct climate in which very hot summers and extremely harsh winters occur, vineyards planted at altitudes of around 300 to 700 meters, soils ranging from granite to slate, and native varieties such as the Côdega de Larinho. , Viosinho, Gouveio, Verdelho and Arinto in the whites, Tinta Amarela, or Bastardo, Tinto Cão, Tinta Carvalha and Tinta Gorda in the reds, which gain greater expression in several hectares of existing century-old old vines, the Trás wine-growing region -os-Montes differentiates itself in the production of unique wines.
Since the typicity and diversity of the wines are inevitably associated with their Terroir, in Trás-os-Montes it was possible to define three sub-regions for the production of quality wines with the right to the Trás-os-Montes Denomination of Origin (DO). , specifically Chaves, Valpaços and the Mirandesa Plateau.
Throughout the Region, the production of wines with Transmontano Geographical Identification (GI) is also possible.
